ABOUT DR. DAN L. EDMUNDS: PSYCHOANALYST, PHILOSOPHER, PROFESSOR, AUTISTIC SELF ADVOCATE
Dr. Dan L. Edmunds was born in Tampa, Florida at 1159pm on March 11, 1975 during the Festival of Mahashivratri. He initially living in the Baycrest Park area of Tampa. He began elementary school at North Shore Elementary in St. Petersburg. In 2nd grade he was tested and determined to be in the gifted range. At the age of 8 he relocated to Fort Collins, Colorado. Where his grandmother, an investment banker and philanthropist and his step grandfather, a bank president resided. While attending Barton Elementary School he was found to have a speech impediment and motor skills concerns requiring speech and occupational therapy. He developed an interest in religions and cultures from the age of 14 and began visiting various communities, a special interest he still maintains and from which he can now recite scriptures and verses in Latin, Greek, Slavonic, Punjabi, Hindi, Arabic, and Hebrew. He has visited and explored various spiritual communities including Sikh, Hindu, Jewish, Christian, Baha'i, Muslim, and Buddhist..
In 5th grade he won an award for the Fort Collins Coloradoan Ethics in Reasoning.
From 1987 to 1988 he was enrolled in acting and singing lessons and in 1989 attended a summer Hebrew school at Congregation Har Shalom in Fort Collins and had his first job assisting at the pro shop at Collindale Golf Course. In 1990 at the age of 15 he was involved in his first press conference addressing local politics.
At the age of 16 he became the youngest legislative intern in the State of Colorado and later served on staff of various political campaigns After relocating to Ormond Beach FL from 1991 to 1993 he developed the Ormond Beach Youth Commission with the approval of them Mayor Nicholas Fortunato and se ved as Youth Mayor. He had the opportunity to transport Martin Luther King III to an event at Bethune Cookman College and spent a day campaigning and to be part of greeters of them Governor Clinton and Senator Gore during their campaign in Daytona Beach. He attended the Congressional Swearing In Ceremonies and National Prayer breakfast in Washington DC in January 1992 He served as a volunteer for the Larimer County Office of Veterans Affairs He returned briefly to Colorado and graduated in 1993 from Fort Collins High School. While again in Fort Collins he was an altar server at St Luke Episcopal Church assisting Fr David Douglas. After graduation from Fort Collins High School he returned briefly to Ormond Beach FL and volunteered for the REACH program helping developmentally different persons at St Brendan Catholic parish. He was baptized and received into the Roman Catholic Church by Fr Anthony Silvestri OSFS and shortly thereafter stayed a brief time as a novice at the Benedictine Abbey of St Leo under Abbot Patrick.
He relocated to his birthplace of Tampa in late 1993. He volunteered at Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa in late 1993 supporting the homeless. He attended Hillsborough Community College from January to May 1994 taking courses in Humanities and Philosophy. He had prior college credits from Advanced Placement examinations taken in High School. He was accepted at both St Leo College and the University of Florida. He opted to attend the University of Florida and began studies in May 1994.
While an undergraduate student at the University of Florida from 1994 to 1997 he volunteered with Sister Hazel Williams (the namesake of the rock band Sister Hazel) and served the disadvantaged of the Gainesville community. Also while attending the University of Florida he received the blessing of Bishop (later Metropolitan) HILARION of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia to establish a campus mission after he had left the Catholic Church for Orthodoxy.
He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Florida in 1997 with a major in Religion, minor in Sociology. Among his mentors at the University of Florida were Rabbi Dr Shaya Isenberg, Dr Dennis Owen, and Dr Gene Thursby. While at the University of Florida he had the opportunity to meet actor Sean Connery who had been a prior patient of RD Laing and was filming Just Cause campus and at his dormitory. In December 1997 he presented a lecture on Eastern Christian Mysticism in Phoenix AZ. For graduate studies he was accepted to the Master of Divinity program at Ashland Theological Seminary and the Master of Arts programs at Fordham University and the University of Scranton. He completed a Master of Arts in Theology in 1999 from the University of Scranton and while there published in the Diakonia Journal for Eastern Christian Studies and was received into the Theta Alpha Kappa National Honor Society for Religious and Theological Studies. . He served as an intern for a trauma center in 1999 and in 2000 entered the field as a mental health professional. In October 1999 he was accepted into the Doctorate of Education in Community Counseling at the University of Sarasota (later Argosy University of Sarasota). From 2000 to 2004 he volunteered as a chaplain for a nursing facility and veterans home.
In 2000 he completed post graduate work in Conflict Resolution and Analysis at Nova Southeastern University and his advisor was Dr Marcia Sweedler. He developed a radio program from 2000 to 2001 to advocate for drug free approaches for children with behavioral and emotional disturbances featuring psychologists Drs John Breeding and Michael Valentine, psychiatrist Peter Breggin, and pediatric neurologist Fred A. Baughman.
From 2000 to 2017 Dr Edmunds served as a Behavioral Specialist Consultant and psychotherapist for children and adolescent behavioral health rehabilitation services.
In 2001 he volunteered as a chaplain following the 9/11 attack in New York City. In 2003 he began collaborating with Dr. Robert Millburne in regards to relational approaches to autism and received Certification in Sexual Abuse Trauma Issues. Dr Millburne once told Dr. Edmunds he was an Aspie with peaks and valleys. In 2003 he encountered Professor Cornel West, a 2024 independent Presidential candidate on a flight from Philadelphia to Tampa as they were each headed to separate speaking engagements. In 2004 and also 2005 he presented at the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology conferences both held in Flushing NY and in 2005 had the opportunity to collaborate with Dr William Glasser, founder of Reality Therapy.
From March to June 2005 he served as an interim pastor for an United Church of Christ congregation.
Dr. Edmunds received his Doctorate of Education in Community Counseling from Argosy University of Sarasota in 2006. His dissertation was titled 'Real Economy System vs. Medication for Children Diagnosed ADHD in a Wraparound Setting'. His dissertation committee consisted of two psychologists, Dr Eddy Regnier and Dr Douglas Riedmiller and a Naval Chaplain and Presbyterian pastor Dr. William Clough.
He later began work with those labeled as schizophrenic forming a supportive community free from force or coercion to work from breakdown to breakthrough. One of his late mentors was psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst, Dr Clancy McKenzie who taught on two trauma mechanism schizophrenia as delayed post traumatic stress. Dr Edmunds has lectured at various schools, colleges and universities and at professional conferences including National Association of Social Workers, Society for Humanistic Psychology, Alternative Education Resources Organization, and Center for the Study of Psychology and Psychiatry and Graham Academy. His guest lectures have included Keystone College, Russell Sage College, University of Florida, University of Scranton, Elmira College, Kings College (PA), Camden County College. Dr. Edmunds has contributed to Psychology Today, Chronogram, Autism File Magazine, Autism World, Autism Parenting, Ability India, Jewish Autism Network, Catholic Stand, Mad in America, Psychology Tomorrow. Dr. Edmunds has presented on Philadelphia CNN Affiliate, Shrink Rap Radio, Autism Radio, Relevant Radio, The Creative Psychotherapist Podcast, Mental Health Network News, and various local radio programs across the US. Dr. Edmunds is the author of Meeting of Two Persons, Comprehensive Drug Free Approach to ADHD, Metanoia, Mystical Metaphors, Being Autistic, Cosmic Dance, Sacred Space and Voices in the Wilderness, Sutra on Despair and Overcoming, Absurdity and the Courage to Be, Bhakti, Voices Within and Destructive Dynamics and Reconstructing Meaning.
From 2005 to 2006 Dr. Edmunds served as Clinical Director for a therapeutic equestrian program serving children with developmental differences.
In 2006 Dr Edmunds presented at and was given a tour of Holos Graduate Seminary in Missouri by Dr Norm Sheeley. He was also a speaker at One Niagara Center in Niagara Falls at a protest event of a psychiatric convention considering medications to prevent mental illness in infants and children.
From 2006 to 2019 in addition to serving in children and adolescent behavioral health rehabilitation services he served part time as a Psychological Evaluator for adolescent day treatment, children and adolescent behavioral health services and therapeutic foster care which included Youth Advocate Programs, CONCERN, Bethesda PATH, and Northwestern Human Services.
In 2007 Dr. Edmunds presented on drug free approaches for children labeled with behavioral disorders at the Alternative Education Resources Organization held at Russell Sage College. He went on extended retreat to the Kadampa Buddhist Meditation Center in Glen Spey NY and took Refuge Vows under Gen Kelsang Dao.
From 2008 to 2011 Dr Edmunds developed a sanctuary for those undergoing extreme states of mind, a therapeutic community project dedicated to autonomy and dignity. A documentary entitled How I Got Off Antipsychotics was later published by one of the community members. In 2011 Dr Edmunds became a member of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies.
From 2008 to 2020 he served part time as a consultant and psychotherapist as part of a holistic clinic in Northeastern Pennsylvania and also offered workshops on meditation, spirituality, and interfaith studies.
From 2010 to 2012 Dr. Edmunds held a lecture tour including Ithaca, Philadelphia, Syracuse, Scranton Belfast, New York City, and Keystone College in Pennsylvania for his book MEETING OF TWO PERSONS. He was invited to speak on radio in Derry, Northern Ireland and on RTÉ and presented at the 2010 International Center for Ethical Psychology conference in Syracuse NY. In 2010 Dr. Edmunds had the privilege of meeting with Rajmohan Gandhi, son of Mahatma Gandhi at the University of Scranton and presented on risks of antipsychotic medications for the American Law Journal airing on the CNN Philadelphia Affiliate. In 2011 he was the opening speaker at the Occupy Scranton event and presented at Occupy Wall Street.
In 2013, Dr. Edmunds was an invited speaker on autism and extreme states of mind at the Society for Humanistic Psychology conference at Pacifica Graduate Institute. While at the conference Dr Robert Stolorow, well known for his work on trauma, offered to assist Dr Edmunds in being able to write for Psychology Today which he began in 2013. Also in 2013 he was also invited to teach Comparative Religion courses at Elmira College, was certified in the Child and Adolescents Strengths Assessment through the University of Ottawa and presented 'Sane in An Insane World' on Freedomain Radio.
In 2014 Dr Edmunds was invited to speak on the Legacy of RD Laing alongside some of his former colleagues, including Andrew Feldmar who was a student and friend of Laing and has become a friend and mentor to Dr. Edmunds. The event was held at Point Park University.
In 2015, Dr Edmunds was a guest along with Congresswoman Michele Baughman on a Des Moines IA based radio program discussing mental health reform.
Quotes from Dr. Edmunds in conjunction with the artistic work of Leif Lonne was presented at a mental health conference in Faro, Portugal in 2016.
A quote from Dr. Edmunds 'Meaning is not found but created' was placed in 2017 on the Tampa Riv 2016-7 he presented two interviews on Relevant Radio, a national Catholic radio station.
In 2019 Dr. Edmunds was invited to speak on extreme states of mind and consciousness at the Into the Wild Festival in Narrowsburg NY. He was also speaker at the National Association of Social Workers conference held in the Poconos of Pennsylvania.
In 2020 Dr. Edmunds spoke at an online conference of Indian mental health professionals from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India on existential approaches to mental health. He also published an article in India on relational approaches to autism.
In 2021 Dr. Edmunds received a formal diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.
In 2022 Dr. Edmunds presented two live streamed lectures on psychoses and voice hearing experience as presented in his book VOICES WITHIN from the Algonquin Hotel in New York City and also presented in Washington DC and participated via video in the Sydney Philosophical Symposia. He was interviewed for the Creative Psychotherapist podcast. He received Certification in Crisis Intervention in this year. Dr Edmunds went on an extended retreat to Vraj Hindu Temple and also participated as a kirtan singer at the Harrisburg PA Ratha Yatra Festival.
Dr. Edmunds is a member of the Hearing Voices Network and much of the present focus of his work has been on bring faithful to the experience of voice heaters and supporting them in creating a place of sanctuary and a common healing space.
Dr. Edmunds is a former member of the Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Center, Honorary Member of the Dominica Psychological Society, Registered Foreign Affiliate Member of the Bahamas Psychological Association, Associate Member of the New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy, member of the Society for Existential Analysis, member of the National Autistic Society UK, member of the Washington Baltimore Psychoanalytic Society, and a member of the Hearing Voices Network UK.
Dr. Edmunds is Board Certified in Sexual Abuse Trauma Therapy and Crisis Intervention.
He is an adjunct faculty member for an Interfaith seminary based in the United Kingdom and an advisor to KOSHISH Nepal, a mental health advocacy organization.
Dr. Edmunds is a member of the Libertarian Party of the United States. In 2003 he delivered a lecture to the Pocono Libertarian Party
Of Scottish American ancestry Dr. Edmunds is a member of the Scottish American Society of Dunedin and the Clan Donnachaidh Society . He is involved as an Associate Member of the Iona Community in Scotland and member of Columcille Megalith Park in the Poconos of Pennsylvania. Dr. Edmunds is a member of the Society of Our Lady of Walsingham.
Dr. Edmunds served from August 2000 to February 2024 as a clinician for High Risk clients through a community based integrative mental health clinic in Pennsylvania. Dr Edmunds served at a Poconos based holistic mental health clinic which also offers psychedelic therapy and assists children, adolescents, and adults. He presently serves at two clinics in Northeastern Pennsylvania. He continues to teach online as part of the UK based interfaith studies program. He resides about one weekend per month in Havre de Grace, Maryland He delivered a lecture in October 2023 on mental health stigma and bullying at the Mosaic Center.
Dr. Edmunds recently published DESTRUCTIVE DYNAMICS AND RECONSTRUCTING MEANING Presentations were delivered on DESTRUCTIVE DYNAMICS AND RECONSTRUCTING MEANING in December 2023 in Scranton PA; Wilmington DE and the Poconos. A plaque containing a quote from Dr Edmunds on meaning and purpose was installed at the Concord Point Lighthouse in Havre de Grace MD in Summer 2024. Dr Edmunds was in attendance at a workshop of the Pennsylvania Gestalt Center on January 6 2024 and presented on his work with extreme states of mind and creating a more humane mental health system on the Christ Centered Mental Health podcast. Dr Edmunds was scheduled to speak on DESTRUCTIVE DYNAMICS AND RECONSTRUCTING MEANING at the World Voice Hearing Congress in Copenhagen Denmark on September 27, 2024 but declined due to differences. He has been offered to teach as an adjunct Professor at Alvernia University in Spring 2025. Dr Edmunds presented on September 20 2024 on extreme states of mind to the Bahamas Psychological Association. He participated as a kirtankaar at the 2024 Ratha Yatra Festival in Harrisburg PA. His article I FEEL HOPE was published in the August 2024"Coracle Magazine of the Iona Community. He is presently working on a new book titled AUTHENTICITY HERE AND NOW. In 2025 he will be presenting at various conferences on his work with extreme states of mind.
Dr Edmunds serves presently in a residential treatment center and as an outpatient psychotherapist in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
